We discuss two exemplary cases wherein a complex interplay between pro- and anti-Chinese sentiment were present in the politics of Chinese immigrants’ access to wealth producing land in New South Wales. The first is the 19th century Lambing Flat gold field riots. The second is the recent ‘boom and bust’ in foreign real estate investment from China.
